Wendy Ealey.. is a well known performer in Melbourne’s folk / roots scene. She has acquired an extensive track record that includes many acoustic festivals around Australia, as well as celebrated folk clubs in the UK. Over the last few years Wendy has been captured by the passion of Brazilian and Spanish tunes and sings impressively in Portuguese, Spanish as well as English – not a purist, she’ll sing anything that ”gets you in the solar plexis”.
Ian Andrews is a seasoned jazz and roots player who has performed in the UK, China and Malaysia as well as in many well – known venues in Melbourne and Sydney. A lover of all good guitar music, Ian’s many influences include icons such as Joao Bosco, Baden Powell Wes Montgomery and George Benson.
Their new duo called Jazz ‘n Samba celebrates the classic as well as lesser played tunes from Latin America. Wendy’s earthy vocals pay tribute to the greats such as Astrid and Joao Gilberto. Her plaintive versions of Sabor a mi and Beijo Roubado also echo a bygone era of romantic Spanish pop music.
Ian’s fluid guitar technique combines walking bass, jazz harmony and single note playing, to give a full, almost band – like sound.
The duo play with respect to the originals but add their own touches, that reflect their diverse musical backgrounds.
The repertoire embraces songs by Carlos Jobim, Louis Bonfa and Georgy Ben. A few Tin Pan alley songbook evergreens are also bossa’d up to vary the mix!
Some tunes to expect, include:
Samba da minha terra
Saudade da Bahia
Cheek to cheek
Mas que nada
The gentle rain
.. and many more!!
